Katherine B. Young

American, 1962
Katherine B. Young is an award‑winning contemporary artist whose compelling depictions of ocean and sky capture vast, meditative spaces. Initially trained as an engineer and plastic surgeon—earning her degrees from Duke University and completing surgical residency at Stanford—Young made a bold career shift after a decade in medicine. She pursued formal art education at the Corcoran School of Art and earned her MFA cum laude from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Her signature technique involves painting on gold‑ or metal‑leafed panels, allowing layers of color to reveal luminous surfaces beneath—evoking spiritual iconography and the reflective qualities of nature. In graphite, her large-scale ocean drawings focus on depth, movement, and tranquility.

Young's work has been exhibited widely—from solo shows at Claire Carino Contemporary in Boston to art fairs in Miami and group exhibitions with the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and the DeYoung and Triton Museums. Her art explores not only beauty but also deeper environmental themes: she currently investigates ocean plastic pollution through mixed-media sculptures and fine art reliefs made from recycled materials.

Represented by Claire Carino Contemporary (Boston), HANG ART (San Francisco), and The Gallery at Tree’s Place (Cape Cod), Young maintains a studio in San Francisco, where she lives with her husband and daughter.
