Maeda Chikubosai I
Japanese, 1872 - 1950
Maeda Chikubōsai I (1872–1950) was a pioneering Japanese bamboo artist renowned for elevating basketry into the realm of fine art. Active during the early 20th century, he gained national recognition in the late Taishō period for creating presentation baskets for the Imperial Household. From 1926 through the late 1930s, Chikubōsai held influential solo exhibitions at Tokyo’s Mitsukoshi Department Store, helping to legitimize bamboo art as a form of individual creative expression. His legacy continued through his son, Maeda Chikubōsai II, who was later honored as a Living National Treasure.
