Noomi Backhausen

Danish
Noomi Backhausen was a Danish ceramicist and textile artist who was born in 1930 and died in 2011. She is best known for her innovative approach to textile design and her contributions to the development of Danish modernism.

Backhausen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where she trained in a variety of disciplines, including ceramics and weaving. She went on to work for several textile mills in Denmark and Sweden, where she developed a reputation for her unique style and experimental techniques.

Backhausen's work is characterized by its use of bold colors, abstract shapes, and unusual textures. She often incorporated non-traditional materials, such as plastic and metal, into her designs, creating pieces that were both functional and sculptural.

In addition to her textile work, Backhausen also worked as a ceramicist, creating a range of decorative and functional objects, including vases, bowls, and plates. Her ceramic work was often characterized by its simplicity and minimalism, with a focus on clean lines and subtle textures.

Today, Backhausen's work is held in the collections of several museums and galleries, including the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
