Stoneware Table Lamp with Relief by Noomi Backhausen for Søholm, Denmark 1960s

$ 3,753
  • Description
    Noomi Backhausen was one of the defining designers at Søholm Keramik on the Danish island of Bornholm, where she created ceramics, lamps, and decorative objects distinguished by bold decoration and expressive glazing. Working at Søholm from the 1960s onward, she developed a highly recognisable visual language built around stylised organic forms and sculptural surfaces.

    This table lamp showcases Backhausen's characteristic artistic approach through a stoneware table lamp featuring a large stylised leaf motif in deep blue against a lighter background in shades of off-white and rusty oranges. Not only this, but she is able to utilise negative space and playful designs to include a switched form, of a light leaf against the blue background. The piece relies on both glaze sections and on raised contours and recessed surfaces to delimit the contours and create a statement piece, giving the surface a tactile quality. The elongated oval form provides an ideal canvas, with the flowing curves of the leaf echoing the silhouette of the lamp itself. The contrast between the clay body and the simple shade allows the ceramic base to remain the visual focus, highlighting the balance between decorative form and functional lighting.

    The handmade character of this lamp preserves subtle variations that reflect the individuality of each piece. Backhausen helped establish pottery as one of Denmark's leading producers of artistic stoneware during the mid-century period, and this lamp is an excellent example of her work.
