Trent Jansen
Trent Jansen is an acclaimed designer based in Thirroul, a coastal town in New South Wales, Australia. He also serves as a lecturer at the University of New South Wales Art & Design in Sydney. Jansen holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong, where he studied under distinguished Australian art historian Ian McLean. He earned his Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, and spent part of his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design in Edmonton, Canada.
Following a formative period working with Marcel Wanders in Amsterdam, Jansen returned to Australia to establish his own design studio in Sydney. He later relocated the practice to Thirroul, where he continues to explore and develop his distinctive approach.
Jansen is known for his use of Design Anthropology, a methodology he applies to create limited edition and bespoke pieces for clients such as the Molonglo Group, Charter Hall, and Mirvac. He also designs for leading manufacturers including Moooi, DesignByThem, and Tait. A founding member of Broached Commissions, Jansen remains closely associated with the studio and is represented by them for in-house commissions.
“Trent has a great deal of respect for cultural heritage and is extraordinarily thorough in incorporating cultural identity and history into his works … his collaboration with Broached Commissions has the same kind of take on defining the Australian design identity as Droog has done for the Dutch design identity.” – Marcel Wanders, Mezzanine, 2015.
