Victor Courtray
French
Victor Courtray (1896–1987) was a French furniture designer and decorator born in Nangis, Seine‑et‑Marne. A top student at the École Boulle in 1914, Courtray began his career working alongside prominent figures like Maurice Dufrêne and Paul Follot before establishing his own studio. His early work was firmly rooted in the Art Deco style, but after relocating to the southwest of France in 1924 he developed a distinctive “Neo‑Basque” aesthetic that blended local regional influences with modern design.
Courtray’s furniture is characterized by solid wood craftsmanship, woven rush seats, and sculptural forms that marry rustic authenticity with refined elegance. His pieces—often in oak and straw—are now highly sought after by collectors and featured in high‑end vintage and design‑focused markets worldwide.
