Description
Swinton, William. Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac. A Critical History of the Operations in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania from the Commencement to the Close of the War, 1861- 1865. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1882. Revised and Reissued Edition. In Red cloth boards with embossed titles to front and spine. Illustrated with engravings and maps.
Presented is a revised and reissued printing of Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac by William Swinton. The book was published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons, in 1882. It is presented in the publisher’s red cloth boards, with black and gilt embossed titles to the front and spine.
Swinton first published Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac in 1866, immediately following the end of the Civil War.The book offers acomprehensive history of the Army of the Potomac's creation, battles, and leaders during the course of the war, andprovided a snapshot of how the victorious North viewed its main army.As a reporter for the New York Times, Swinton witnessed several battles and was familiar with many of the chief officers, who provided him with their memoirs and diaries at the end of the war. He also interviewed many of the Confederate officers to gain their perspectives.
CONDITION:
Good condition. Octavo. Red cloth hardcover boards, with black and gilt embossed titles to the front board and black embossed titles to the spine. Bumping to spine, small scattered stains to boards, small hole in spine. Interior pages are very clean and healthy. Light foxing to frontispiece illustration, all else in good condition. Illustrated with engravings and maps.
Book Dimensions: 9 1/2" H x 6 1/2" W x 1 3/4" D.
