Description
18th century Louis XVI ormolu and marble cercle tournant mantel clock by Lepaute
French, Late 18th Century
Height 39cm, width 18cm, depth 12cm
Dating from the latter part of the 18th century, this distinguished French mantel clock exemplifies the refinement and technical ingenuity of French decorative arts. Referred to as a cercle tournant, or rotating dial clock, this rare timepiece diverges from conventional designs by employing two rotating cylindrical enamel bands that complete a full revolution, while the indicator hand remains stationary. The clock was crafted in the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Lepaute (1727-1808) and Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789), one of the most prominent Parisian clockmakers of the period.
A sculpted block of marble, adorned at the top with a delicate gilt bronze floral finial, forms the crowning feature of the piece. Just below, a frame of finely detailed gilt bronze encases the clock’s sophisticated internal workings. The movement features twin revolving enamel cylinders: one displaying Roman numerals to denote the hours, and the other featuring Arabic numerals marking five-minute intervals. A central star-shaped dial, inlaid with sparkling paste gems, provides the time indication in elegant fashion. The mechanical intricacy is proudly revealed through the open construction beneath.
Supporting the mechanism are four gilded pillars, each topped with pinecone finials and connected by festooned swags. At the heart of the base, a sculptural pair of doves, representing enduring love, rests serenely. In front of them is a flaming torch, while a radiant sunburst pendulum elegantly oscillates in the foreground.
The entire structure stands atop a square marble plinth raised on gilded feet. Each corner is embellished with ormolu mounts shaped as flaming hearts pierced by arrows. The front of the base bears the signature ‘Lepaute / A PARIS’, enclosed by a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon, denoting craftsmanship of the highest order.
A magnificent showcase of 18th century French horology, this clock blends sculptural beauty with mechanical innovation, making it a standout collector’s item or a refined focal point for an interior steeped in classic elegance.
