Description
18167: Orientalist Enamelled Glass Mosque Lamp
German, early 20th Century
Height 30cm, diameter 22cm
This elegant mosque lamp is a refined example of Orientalist glasswork, inspired by historic Mamluk enamelled lamps traditionally used in Islamic religious interiors from the 13th century onwards. These suspended lamps symbolised divine illumination and were often richly decorated with inscriptions and gilded ornament.
The present example was made by Fritz Heckert, one of the leading German glasshouses of the late 19th and early 20th century, renowned for its high-quality decorative enamelling and its interest in historicising and exotic revival styles. The firm became particularly known for its sophisticated reinterpretations of Islamic and Orientalist glass forms.
The lamp is executed in blown glass of characteristic rounded form, decorated with finely applied enamel and gilt ornament. The surface features intricate scrolling decoration and stylised Arabic-inspired motifs, arranged in balanced bands around the body. Suspension loops are fitted at the lower edge, in keeping with traditional mosque lamp construction.
Rich in colour and detail, the gilded and enamelled decoration enhances the luminous quality of the glass, creating a warm decorative effect when illuminated.
A finely executed and highly decorative Orientalist object, combining historic inspiration with early 20th-century European glassmaking craftsmanship.
