Neoclassical style French malachite and gilt bronze mantel clock
French, Late 19th Century
Height 48cm, width 30cm, depth 15cm
This Neoclassical Louis XVI style mantel clock features a centrally placed circular enamel dial with Arabic numeral indices. The dial is surrounded with ormolu mounts, including a tied ribbon and foliate detailing. The clock itself is of architectural form, with six ormolu feet supporting an unusually shaped base, which features six columns. The four side columns are of bowed shape while the front two are oblong, with ormolu floral swags at the top and a sunburst Apollo mask pendulum suspended between them. Either side of the dial are a pair of vases, from which spring ormolu flowers, and the very top of the clock is surmounted by an ormolu eagle atop a sphere.
The body of the clock is crafted from a later malachite veneer, with Neoclassical ormolu mounts throughout. -
