Rare Antique Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Champlevé and Brass Crystal Regulator Clock

$ 8,500
  • Description
    An exceptionally rare Antique Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Champlevé and Brass Crystal Regulator Clock, dating to approximately 1895. This outstanding timepiece beautifully combines the elegance of French clockmaking with the distinguished reputation of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., making it a highly desirable collector's piece and a superb example of late 19th-century decorative arts.

    The beautifully proportioned brass case is richly adorned with vibrant champlevé enamel panels featuring a delicate light green ground accented by intricate gilt decoration. The elegant oval-form case is fitted with beveled glass panels on all sides, allowing the movement and pendulum to be admired from every angle. Both the front and rear glass doors open for convenient access to the movement, while the case is crowned by a distinctive rounded finial and rests on four finely cast brass feet, completing its graceful architectural design.
    The painted porcelain dial is signed by Bigelow, Kennard & Co., while the high-quality French eight-day spring-driven time and strike movement is signed "Japy Frères / A-1," one of France's most respected clock manufacturers. Completing the interior is its original mercury pendulum, a feature highly prized by collectors for both its beauty and historical significance. Rather than manufacturing all of its own clocks, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. imported high-quality movements and complete clocks from leading French makers—including Japy Frères—and retailed them under its own name. This is why many Bigelow, Kennard & Co. clocks feature a dial signed by the Boston retailer while the movement bears the mark of a French manufacturer.

    Standing 20 inches high, 9.5 inches wide, and 7.5 inches deep, this elegant regulator clock is perfectly sized for display on a mantel, desk, console, library cabinet, or display case. Its crystal case, richly colored champlevé decoration, and finely finished brass surfaces make it an eye-catching centerpiece that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.
    The clock is in good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. The brass retains a beautiful warm patina, the champlevé enamel decoration remains vibrant, and the porcelain dial is beautifully preserved. Renowned for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. clocks are highly sought after, and examples of this caliber are increasingly difficult to find. Elegant, rare, and meticulously crafted, this remarkable crystal regulator clock is an outstanding collector's item and a true conversation piece that will enhance any fine clock or decorative arts collection.
