Chinese Blue & White Clobbered Jar, Circa 1700

$ 8,200
  • Description
    Rare and refined blue and white “clobbered” jar with carved lid, very finely painted and parcel gilded in iron red, cobalt blue and poison green, decorated with four shield shapes within which is a figure crossing a bridge with pagodas in the background, scrolls, books and vases. Between the shields are flowers and foliage. The hardwood lid is carved with prunus blossoms.

    The practice of over-painting blue and white Chinese porcelain originated in Holland in the 18th century because there was high demand for polychrome wares. The lack of sufficient wares caused many Dutch Delft companies to decorate blue and white porcelains with colorful enamels. The colors were refired and became permanent. The original blue and white decoration is intact under the enamel.
