Description
19th century majolica jardiniere by Minton and Carlo Marochetti
English, 1852
Height 37cm, diameter 46cm
This exquisite jardiniere was manufactured by the celebrated English company Minton, who are famous for their ceramics. It was designed by Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867), an Italian-born sculptor who worked in London in the latter part of his career. His most famous work is the bronze sculpture of Richard the Lionheart, which stands outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London.
The jardiniere is circular with a body that tapers inwards towards the green socle base, which is decorated with laurel leaves and pink ribbons. The body of the jardiniere is coloured with turquoise ground and features broad, spiral ribbing all over. Mounted to either side are twin rams' head mask handles, which are joined by large pastel coloured swags of flowers and fruits. Directly above the rams’ heads, the rim of the jardiniere is decorated with a blue, white and orange egg and dart pattern, and the interior is coloured with lilac ground.
