Description
This monumental abstract floor sculpture stands at an impressive 74.5 inches tall and serves as a definitive expression of the mid-20th-century Northern California Studio Craft movement. Sourced from an estate near Santa Cruz, California, the sculpture is hand-carved from a single, massive vertical beam of salvaged old-growth Douglas Fir. The composition features a complex series of intersecting, hard-edged geometric blocks meticulously carved into the midsection of the column, flanked by long, elegantly tapering vertical standards. The timber possesses immense wabi-sabi character, heavily figured with historical wood-boring beetle tracking, deep weather-grooved grain variations, and natural age checking.
During the 1960s and 1970s, the Santa Cruz and coastal California enclaves became major regional epicenters for Brutalist woodworking. Choosing to bypass pristine, commercially milled lumber, regional sculptors selectively harvested old-growth timbers from dismantled 19th-century regional structures, letting the natural decay and ancient growth rings dictate the final form. This sculpture masterfully balances that raw, untamed texturing with sophisticated, hard-edged geometric modernism. Engineered specifically for seamless interior display, the heavy timber column slides onto a custom 8-inch angled steel rod welded to a low-profile 10 x 10-inch steel plate base. This internal mounting system counter-balances the substantial weight of the wood perfectly, allowing the sweeping vertical form to stand entirely stable without external supports.
Dimensions
Total Height: 74.5 in (189.23 cm)
Base Plate: 10 in x 10 in (25.4 cm x 25.4 cm)
Internal Mounting Rod: 8 in (20.32 cm) Angled Steel
Condition Report
Overall Condition: Very Good – Sturdy, structurally sound, and completely stable.
Wood Column: The salvaged timber body exhibits extensive, intentional natural wear patterns including deep vertical drying splits (checking)—most prominent at the top crown—and dense historical insect tracking. These elements are intrinsic, celebrated characteristics of the aged wood and do not compromise the physical integrity of the piece. The wood features a clean, dry, low-lustre surface finish.
Base & Mounting Hardware:
The custom steel plate base and internal 8-inch angled anchoring rod are in excellent condition. The metal retains a dark, uniform industrial finish and holds the heavy wood column securely balanced without wobbling. -
