A Japanese Plique-a-jour vase by Ando Jubei Company

$ 2,000
  • Description
    An exquisite plique-a-jour cloisonne vase by Ando Company, likely mid-late 20th century. A work of art, this baluster shaped vase is crafted with the most refined designs and technique. The pattern features large bundles of white calla lilies and orange orchids in exuberant tropical foliage on a pale green background. The color pallet is subtle but harmonious and striking, calling to mind the painting of Georgia O'Keeffe. Under the light, it irradiates a translucent beauty that is hard to describe. With silver color metal ring and three feet (likely chrome as it is not marked as silver), an Ando sticker remains under the piece as well as the wood box as shown.
    For a similar piece see Number FE.31:1, 2-2011 in the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum Collection.
    Plique-a-jour was reputedly introduced and further developed in Japan by Ando Jubei (1876-1953) and Kawade Shibatarō (1856–1921), after he saw a French piece in Paris exposition around 1900s. It is known as shotai-jippo, meaning cloisonne without backing (whereby the metal body was dissolved after firing and polishing). The technique is notoriously difficult and labor-intense. It was rarely used to make large piece as the surface tension tends to break the enamel.
