Description
Carved Hardstone Egret in Rose Quartz and Hematite
Continental Europe, 20th Century
Height 15 cm, width 14 cm, depth 10 cm
This 20th-century carved hardstone egret is a refined example of mineral sculpture, combining lapidary skill with the natural beauty of rose quartz and crystalline hematite. Bird models in carved stone gained popularity in the late 19th and 20th centuries, particularly within Continental European workshops, where artisans specialised in shaping semi-precious stones into lifelike forms.
The egret is modelled as a wading bird, its body carved from softly toned rose quartz. The pale pink stone subtly varies in hue and is delicately worked to suggest layered plumage. Its elongated neck curves downward in a characteristic pose, terminating in a contrasting black hardstone beak, while small inset eyes provide added expression and definition.
The legs are crafted in gilt metal, realistically articulated and textured, and securely mounted onto a natural mineral hematite geode base. The crystalline formation introduces tonal contrast and surface variation, highlighting the interplay between polished carving and raw mineral texture. The ensemble is raised on a shaped black marble plinth, ensuring both visual balance and stability.
Exhibiting a harmonious dialogue between artistic interpretation and the intrinsic qualities of the chosen stones, the sculpture combines the translucency of rose quartz, the sparkle of crystalline hematite, and the warmth of gilt metal mounts to create an object that is simultaneously decorative and materially expressive.
This carved hardstone egret represents a distinguished example of 20th-century decorative stone carving, appealing to collectors of mineral art, naturalistic sculpture, and exceptional interior objets d’art. -
