Art Deco Purple Glass Vase by Charles Schneider, France, 1926

Description
A dramatic and sculptural vase by Charles Schneider, of compressed spherical body rising to a tall, slender neck. The smoky deep purple/aubergine glass is worked throughout with a dense field of controlled bubbles — a signature Schneider technique that gives the glass a luminous, textured, almost celestial quality when lit from behind. The neck is banded with a series of applied trailing glass rings, and the shoulder is punctuated with pulled, wing-like applied cabochons in a contrasting soft lavender-pink glass, adding a sculptural, almost zoomorphic flourish to the piece.

The confident scale, heavily bubbled surface, and sculptural applied ornamentation are hallmarks of Schneider's most ambitious art glass production, in which the glasshouse pushed beyond flat surface color into deliberately textured, dimensional effects. Signed to the underside "Schneider."
