Description
This English art pottery, Person-pattern vase is hand-decorated after a design attributed to Christopher Dresser. The terracotta-color, green, blue, gold, and lavender decorations are in the Aesthetic Movement taste, with a row of botehs, leaf-like figures being a prominent feature around the shoulder. The interior glaze is lavender in color, while the green top and terracotta-color bottom sections offset in a dramatic way the Persian blue shoulder band with its golden botehs and black vines along with gold and white dots. The boteh pattern is similar to the dominant pattern on Paisley shawls and many Persian rugs. The vase has wear typical of this textured type of pottery, as seen in some of the photographs. The signature on the base is obscure, but the vase was probably made in North Yorkshire, England at the Linthorpe Art Pottery, of which Christopher Dresser was Art Superintendent from 1879 to 1882.
