New England Winter's Day, John Wolfe, Oil Paint on Academy Baard

$ 750
  • Description
    This American regionalist painting by John Wolfe, circa 1945, is in its original frame. It depicts a Vermont village beneath mountain ridges on a cold winter's day, with a covered bridge in the foreground. It is signed on the lower right.

    Wolfe's impressionist style evokes the change in weather from a recent winter thaw and the melting of snow and ice, back to a below-freezing day when chimney smoke rises straight upward. Wolfe uses light brushstrokes and vague edges to create this particular New England mood of rapidly changing temperature. The resulting effect is very pleasing and kindles memories of old Vermont..

    The overall measurements including the frame are listed above. The actual measurements of the painting are 19"W x 14.5"H x 1"D. The frame is original to the painting and reflects a mid-20th century rustic mood.
