Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Basket Sculpture by Morikami Jin

Sold Sold
  • Description
A wonderful woven bamboo basket with a sculptural form hand crafted by Japanese Bamboo Artist Morigami Jin (born 1955-). It was constructed with split Madake bamboo strips and rattan fiber, using free hand twining and wrapping techniques. Essentially keeping with the form of a traditional Ikebana basket, the artist transformed it into a slightly irregular and impressively airy sculpture with poetic undulation weaving and subtle variation in spacing. It is signed "Jin" in Kanji under the base. The basket was originally purchased from Tai Modern Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.
Morigami Jin was born a bamboo artist from Beppu, Oita Prefecture. He studied under his father Morigami Tetsuo. His work is known for their delicate weavings that achieve a quiet but confident sculptural quality.
