Nicaraguan Carved Hummingbird Studio Art Pottery Vessel by Jose Guerrero

$ 1,250
  • Description
    An exceptional hand-crafted studio pottery vessel by Master Ceramicist Jose Guerrero, created in collaboration with Carolina in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. This sculptural red clay vessel is a remarkable example of contemporary Nicaraguan ceramic art, honoring the artistic traditions of the Chorotega people, descendants of the ancient Maya civilization.

    For more than 25 years, the Guerrero family has dedicated itself to preserving and revitalizing the artistic heritage of their Chorotega ancestors. As the fourth generation of a family of master ceramicists, Jose Guerrero combines centuries-old pre-Columbian techniques with his own contemporary artistic vision. In recognition of their extraordinary contribution to Nicaraguan ceramics, Jose Guerrero was awarded the prestigious title of "Maestro Ceramista de Nicaragua" by the Technological Institute of Nicaragua in 2000.

    The Guerrero family's work has been exhibited internationally through cultural exchanges, museum exhibitions, and competitions in Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Iran, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, while examples of their work reside in museum collections in Germany, Argentina, and Taiwan.

    Each vessel begins with clay prepared by hand in the artists' own workshop. Every piece is individually thrown, carved, sculpted, and decorated entirely by hand using natural mineral pigments before being fired in traditional kilns, making every example completely unique.

    This vessel features an elegant composition of hummingbirds in flight among stylized blossoms, meticulously rendered through intricate sgraffito carving and richly layered earth tones of charcoal, oxblood, olive green, and warm terracotta. The deeply textured background creates dramatic contrast and emphasizes the graceful movement of the birds, giving the piece exceptional sculptural presence from every angle.

    Interior designers will appreciate its low architectural silhouette and organic palette, making it an outstanding centerpiece for a coffee table, dining table, console, pedestal, or built-in display. It pairs beautifully with Organic Modern, Wabi-Sabi, Contemporary, Southwestern, and sophisticated global interiors while serving as both fine art and functional ceramic sculpture.
