Description
Porcelain busts of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in style of Sèvres
French, 19th Century
Male: Height 35.5cm, width 18.5cm, depth 13cm
Female: Height 40cm, width 18cm, depth 13cm
This pair of busts depicts the former King and Queen of France, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The busts are crafted from unglazed white porcelain, known as bisque, or biscuit. Each porcelain bust is raised by a gilt bronze base, which supports a porcelain cylindrical podium. The bust of Louis XVI is unadorned and unpainted, while the bust of Marie Antoinette is parcel gilt—her jewellery accented by gold. The busts are exceptionally finely crafted, creating accurate likenesses of the 18th Century royals. -
