Description
Pair of French gilt bronze mounted Sèvres style porcelain vases
French, 19th Century
Height 30cm, width 18cm, depth 13cm
These beautiful porcelain vases feature elegant Rococo-style decorations in the manner of the Sèvres manufacturers.
The vases feature slightly flared cylindrical porcelain bodies which are topped by shallow domed porcelain lids. The lids are crowned by gilt bronze (ormolu) foliate pinecone finials. The bodies are mounted with gilt bronze mouths which are decorated with Vitruvian scroll patterns. Each vase is mounted with two gilt bronze handles, which take the form of satyr heads.
Beautiful paintings decorate the bodies of the vases. These depict playful cherubs on the vases' fronts and flowers on their reverses. These images are set within gilt oval frames with floral and geometric flourishes, against ‘bleu celeste’ (sky blue) grounds.
The vases stand on splayed gilt bronze feet with foliate tops, fluted centres, and edges encircled by wreaths. They are set on square gilt bronze plinths with scalloped corners, their tops lined with stylised foliate patterns. -
