Description
This impressive three-column glazed ceramic sculpture with a cauldron centerpiece stands as a significant monumental work by respected Indiana ceramicist and educator Vance Bell. Formally de-accessioned by the Indiana State Museum circa 2021, the ensemble features three distinctive pillars measuring 70", 73", and 76" in height, anchored by a 20" tall centerpiece cauldron measuring 21 by 19 inches.
Ex-collection: Indiana State Museum
Historical Reference & Configuration
The configuration and title directly reference Fulk Lake (frequently spelled phonetically or colloquially as Falk Lake) located near Churubusco, Indiana.
• The Legend of Oscar: Fulk Lake is legendary in Indiana folklore as the home of the "Beast of Busco" (or "Oscar"), a mythical, prehistoric 500-pound alligator snapping turtle first reported by farmer Oscar Fulk in 1898 and sighted by crowds in the late 1940s.
• The Site Marker Concept: Bell’s arrangement evokes an archaeological or mythic "site marker," standardizing the landscape's folklore into physical monumentality. The deep blue-green glazed texture mimics the organic look of aged stone or aquatic patina, a direct stylistic nod to lake geology and the murky depths inhabited by the legendary beast.
• The Cauldron Centerpiece: Positioned in the middle of the three monoliths, the cauldron serves as a conceptual vessel, evoking ancient water basins, ritual markers, or the deep, dark kettle lake itself.
Artist Background: Vance Bell
Vance Bell is an American ceramic artist, professor, and sculptor known for his studio ceramics and wood-fired pottery. His work frequently plays with classic utilitarian pottery forms, infusing them with dynamic, expressive angles and textures shaped by traditional kiln techniques.
Biography & Academic Background
• Education: Bell earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1986 from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, an institution renowned for its long-standing ceramic arts program.
• Teaching Career: He has shared his expertise in throwing, drawing, and figurative hand-building as an art educator, notably serving on the fine arts faculty at Ball State University. Throughout his teaching career, he has been recognized alongside prominent contemporary American ceramicists like Ted Neal.
Artistic Style & Technique
• Wood-Fired Kilns: A hallmark of Bell's practice is his mastery of wood firing. He frequently fires his stoneware pieces in train-type kilns, utilizing natural wood ash and iron-bearing glazes over raw clay slips. This volatile firing method yields highly rich, unpredictable surfaces where the path of the flame and molten fly-ash melt directly onto the clay bodies.
• Form & Movement: His most celebrated works—including his distinctive, jaunty "tilted teapots"—subtly alter standard pottery symmetry. By introducing rakish, geometric tilts, his pieces project an animated energy while remaining entirely functional, hospitality-minded vessels. He also crafts complex sculptural work and larger thematic pieces, such as his award-winning ceramic work titled "Caustic Carg -
