Victor Gutierrez Limited Edition Bronze Seated Woman Sculpture, Mexico 1981

A striking limited-edition bronze sculpture by Mexican artist Victor Gutierrez, dated 1981 and numbered III/V, depicting a contemplative seated woman enveloped in a dramatically draped garment.

The sculpture is especially compelling for its combination of Mexican figurative modernism and highly stylized geometric abstraction. Gutierrez gives the figure an architectural presence: the broad, almost triangular silhouette of the garment contrasts with the delicately modeled face, elongated hands and exposed feet. Incised geometric and textile-like patterns animate the surface of the dress, lending the bronze a distinctly Mexican visual vocabulary.

The finish is particularly attractive, combining a mottled green verdigris patina with warm brown and golden-bronze accents to the face, neck, arms, hands and feet.
