Brazilian Mid-Century Modern Tray in Rosewood, Jean Gillon, 1960s

Handcrafted in Brazil in the 1960s, this elongated serving tray reflects the disciplined minimalism that characterized the country’s modern design movement during its period of international reach. Its extended, rectilinear proportions and restrained detailing emphasize clarity of line and material presence over embellishment.

Carved from solid jacarandá (Brazilian rosewood), the tray is defined by a recessed central field framed by gently sloping edges. The integrated oval handholds are carved directly into each end, emerging seamlessly from the mass of the wood rather than applied as separate elements. The result is a continuous surface in which structure and function are unified. The elongated format lends the piece a strong horizontal emphasis, reinforcing its architectural character.

The jacarandá displays pronounced grain movement across the length of the tray, with tonal variations ranging from deep umber to lighter amber striations. These natural shifts in color and figure animate the otherwise restrained form. The wood has been carefully refinished to restore depth and luster while preserving subtle marks consistent with age. The piece remains in excellent overall condition.
