Description
A charming Japanese farmer's jacket with strong Mingei folk art appeal. This jacket, known as Farmer's Harten. was made from a cotton fabric with indigo resist dye on exterior and lined for a coarse woven cotton inside for warmth against cold weather. Open front edged with long lapel that extends all the way to the bottom, the simple form was meant for an outer layer easily put on and taken off. What's truly striking of this jacket is the resist dye pattern that is geometrical with sharp angles and lines, achieved by "Katazome", a dying method using stencils. The linked large square with small square cutout inside stands out for its eye-catching graphic quality. The design covers the entire surface, rendering the garment a bold and modern appeal. The piece can be comfortably attributed to early 20th century.
When displayed fully extended as shown, it measures 51" W by 47.5" H. -
