  • Description
    GERMAN SCHOOL
    19th century

Hiker Passing Cattle and Sheep in an Alpine Landscape

    Oil on panel, unsigned

    [frame] 23” H x 25 3/4” W x 4 1/2” D
    [panel] 10 1/2” H x 13 1/2” W

A lovely and crisp work in oil on panel, this bright painting captures the meanderings of a hiker through the mountains. He wanders past a small alpine home around which two sheep and three cows rest lazily in the sun. High chroma with vivid colors, the light is crystal clear and reflects the same essence of how you actually feel when hiking the Alps. Shadows cast by the nearby clouds shade the forefront of the brilliant green grass and diverse foliage.

Condition Report: Panel has a gentle curve (see gap between frame and panel). Professionally conserved, minor inpainting visible under UV, new traditional Damar varnish. Frame with some element loss on left side, gaps in corners, professional restoration and gilding touch ups.
