PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF GEORGE AND MARY CHANNING GIBBS

Reference: Listed in Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works Compiled by Lawrence Park, Vol. I, page 346-348, numbers 326 and 328. George Gibbs, Sr. (1735-1803) was born in Newport, Rhode Island and knew Gilbert Stuart there growing up. Gibbs led a successful career as a grain merchant and ultimately founded the shipping firm, Gibbs and Channing . His portrait was exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 1836 and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1895. Gibbs married Mary Channing (1747-1824), also of Newport and the sister of his business partner, in 1787. Stuart painted her portrait circa 1803.
Provenance: Colonel George Gibbs (1776-1833); to his son Professor Oliver Wolcott Gibbs (1822-1908); to his sister Elizabeth Wolcott Gibbs (1819-1900), wife of Lucius Tuckerman; and through the family. -
