Robert Philipp was a well‑established New York–born, listed artist who worked extensively in Paris from the 1920s through the 1960s. He gained recognition early in his career, and his work reflects a rich range of influences, including Vermeer, Rembrandt, Renoir, Bonnard, Sargent, and Fantin-Latour.
Philipp studied at the Art Students League with George Bridgman and Frank DuMond, and at the National Academy with Douglas Volk and George Willoughby Maynard. After his studies he returned to painting full-time, settling in Paris in the 1920s. His paintings are held in major collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Dallas Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). -
