Description
Set of eight 19th century Chinese pith paper paintings depicting dignitaries
Chinese, 19th Century
Paper: Height 20cm, width 34cm
Frame: Height 24cm, width 36cm, depth 1.5cm
This remarkable set of eight Chinese watercolours is painted on the unique medium of pith paper, also known as rice paper. Due to its lower absorbency, pith paper allows the paint to pool on the surface, creating a stunning vibrancy and depth of colour. This distinctive feature is evident in each piece in this set. Pith paintings became highly popular during the 19th century, often collected by European travellers as exquisite mementos that captured the elegance of Chinese culture and nature.
This collection centres on dignitaries, emphasizing their status and societal power. Each scene depicts a dignitary, typically seated on an ornate throne or luxurious seating, signifying their importance. Surrounding them are attendants, some standing guard while others bow in reverence or engage in discussions of significant matters. Several paintings are set indoors, with the artist skilfully rendering detailed wall coverings and patterned floors.
The colour palette is both vibrant and sophisticated, with bold greens and blues predominating the scenes. These are complemented by lighter accents producing a harmonious and striking effect throughout the collection.
All paintings are framed in an unusual frame with black, cream and blue details, its design matching that of the floor in the paintings.
Ideal for both traditional and modern interiors, this set of paintings brings an air of timeless elegance and cultural richness to one’s space. -
