Description
Amid a triumphant drumbeat of the Abstract Expressionist movement, pioneer collage artist Ray Johnson created a minimalist work from a carefully cut magazine clipping mounted on a black background. The work's scale adds to Johnson's ongoing nonlinear quest for originality. In reaction to the vast canvases of Rothko, Still, Kline, and Pollock, whose works were measured in feet, this work is measured in inches and fits in the palm of your hand almost like a paintbrush. Its simple shape, color, and material point to minimal art. Yet this work has unexpected complexity in how he cuts and designs the magazine clipping, using positive and negative shapes. Johnson is hard to pin down because he worked across many styles, but in each case his works reflect the artist's state of mind. Signed and titled on verso: Ray Johnson, Collage, 1958, in most likely the original frame. The frame is inextricably linked with the art - Frame size is 5.38 x 8.4 inches
