Antique watercolour of Palazzo Signoria in Florence

$ 10,000
  • Description
    This beautiful view of a Florentine courtyard was painted by A. Marrani, an artist who, in the late 19th Century, painted many views of the Tuscan city. The cortile (‘courtyard’) shown in the painting is situated in the medieval Palazzo Signoria, also known as the Palazzo Vecchio.

    The cortile was conceived in the mid-15th Century by Michelozzo, and features in the foreground a fountain with a cherub and dolphin after a bronze model by Andrea del Verrocchio. The scene includes many other historically significant artworks, including a marble sculpture by Pierino da Vinci and frescoes by Giorgio Vasari.

    Marrani employs delicate brushstrokes to render a convincing representation of the courtyard. He has executed the scene using a subdued and muted colour palette. The watercolour, within a cream mount, is displayed in a carved giltwood frame.

    The board is monogrammed and signed in the lower right corner, ‘A. Marrani’.
