    A Litchfield Farm in Winter. Signed (l.r.): Van Laer, ca. 1915.
    Oil on canvas. Housed in a finely carved Childe Hassam style frame.
    20” x 27”, 27 ½” x 34 ½” with frame.
    Over-all in excellent condition.
    Provenance: Collection of Dr. Jay St. Mark, Newtown, Connecticut.
    Ex-collection of Robert Austin.
    Exhibited: Alexander Theobald Van Laer, The Lost Landscapes, Mattatuck Museum, Waterbury, CT, 1999.

    By the time Van Laer moved to Litchfield his style of painting became more impressionistic, often using a light and softer palette. He exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute, the Lotos Club, the Union League Club and the MacBeth Gallery, and in 1904 he was awarded a Gold Medal at the St. Louis World’s Fair Exhibition.
