Description
Fitzpatrick & Kaufmann team up for another high performance art work. It combines a pre-photorealistic painting of a 1965 Pontiac by Fitzpatrick with a highly stylized modernist graphic landscape by Kaufmann. This tag-team painting captures a decisive moment of a highly idealized scene in an emotionally compelling way. Mid-century car advertising art, with its masterful craftsmanship and exquisite detail, belongs in an elevated place in the canon of Fine Art. Currently, we are waiting for a modern reinterpretation of commercial art by museum curators who are stuck on race and gender alone. It will happen, hopefully soon, as we are seeking other commercial art venues, such as Disney and Comic art outperform the fine art market with soaring prices into the seven figures. Overlooked commercial artists who have created a benchmark of visual excellence and innovation in the automotive field should be next in line.
Arthur "Art" Fitzpatrick (American, 1919-2015) & Van Kaufman (American, 1918-1995)

Original 1965 Pontiac 2+2 convertible advertisement that highlighted the luxury performance model as a "classy sleeper" and "big brother to the GTO," frequently featuring the tagline "Some cars try to look like Pontiacs. Some cars try to act like Pontiacs. Lots of Luck!". These ads often showcased the 421-cubic-inch V8 engine, iconic fender gills, and bucket seat interior, emphasizing a blend of full-size comfort and high-performance, often in 2-page color spreads
The present work is published on page 22 of the 1965 Pontiac sales brochure and is accompanied by a copy of the brochure.
An element of collage is the car at the center of the work. Wear and markings to the board in keeping with the illustration and publishing process. Framed under acrylic, not examined outside of frame.
