Description
CARL WUERMER (1900-1981)
Snowbound Acres
American School, Lived/Active: New York and California
Ca. 1950
Signed (l.r.), Carl Wuermer
Oil on canvas
19 3/4” x 23 3/4”, 27” x 30” (framed)
Condition: Excellent Condition, no evidence of any restoration. In a carved frame, appears to be original.
Provenance: From a New Hampshire Estate.
Similar to the Pointillists, Carl Wuermer’s technique was to build up his canvas by using dots of color, although his final results were much more realistic. This panoramic view of Woodstock, Vermont conveys a sense of serenity and calmness. Snowbound Acres is a great example of Wuermer’s work, both capturing the viewer and leading the eye into the distant vista. He exhibited widely, and in 1928 won the prestigious Franie Murphy Memorial Prize from the National Academy of Design. -
