Having died at a young age, romantic landscape works by Charles Codman are scarce to find. Codman perhaps became one of the best self-taught artists of the early 19th century. He began his career as a decorative or ornamental painter with no formal training. In 1827, influential writer and critic, John Neal helped establish Codman’s career by becoming his greatest promoter. This landscape shows Codman’s ability as an accomplished artist, evident by his depth of view and dramatic use of lighting.
Today, Codman’s work can be found in various museums and institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
