26″ x 36″, 35 ½” x 45 ½” with frame.
Over-all in excellent condition, lined, in the original frame.
Provenance: Associated American Artist, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (label on verso), Christies, New York, 1990, Private Collector, Connecticut.
Born in Germany, Ernest Fiene came to the United States in 1912 and spent the first fifteen years studying at various New York institutions and became known as a painter of American scenes. This work, “New Snow,” 1943, depicts a church located in Easton, Connecticut. The composition was first published by Associated American Artists and Ernest Fiene as a lithograph in an edition of 250 pencil signed prints and awarded “First Purchase Prize” by the Library of Congress in 1946.
