Attributed to George Hartwell (1815-1901)
Unsigned, dated 1846
14″ x 16″, 17 3/4″ x 13 1/2″ (framed)
Inscribed on verso, “Sarah Jane Clay her likeness it is true, 1846, sister of Martha (Clay) Dearbourn.” George Hartwell was a member of the Prior-Hamblin group of painters. He was related to William Matthew Prior by marriage and he painted signs and portraits of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and Auburn, Maine. -
