“Jericho” 1979, is a large 68 3/4 in. x 44 1/2 in. graphite and gesso painting on canvas by Californian artist, Gordon Thorpe in a honey wood frame signed and dated on the verso. Thorpe, who was primarily known for his etchings, deconstructs this large painting with a similar technique. The overall abstracted design upon closer inspection is comprised of a myriad of strokes of colored graphite on a gessoed canvas. Executed in shades of black, off-white, brick, teal and royal blue, the dynamic geometric design is in seamless harmony as the viewer’s eye travels across the painting. Thorpe exhibited his work in the first annual National Print Exhibition in Los Angeles and was an art professor at Pasadena Community College and lecturer at University of California, Riverside. “Jericho,” is from the corporate art collection of Atlantic Richfield Corporation.
