Description
The artist portrayed an upper-class lady who has some facial features of Reynolds' Mrs. Andrews. More specifically the long, straight nose and the large eyes. Her head resting on her hand is reminiscent of the classic ‘gestus melancholicus’. An open book is on the table in front of her. Unlike Reynolds’ canvasses, this painting lacks fresh colors and a loose brush stroke. Cleaning the canvas would already make a big difference. The charm of this work lies in the dreamy gaze of the lady and the stillness of the moment.
