Jurgen Huge born in Hamburg, Germany came to the U.S. as a young seaman, which set the course for many of his later paintings. He lived in Bridgeport, CT in 1862, making his living as a grocer. However, he produced numerous paintings over his life, which included landscapes, marines and daily life. His large and detailed ships’ portraits are eagerly sought-after by American marine and folk art collectors and he often garnered commissions from ship owners.
The Bay of Naples depicts the beauty and majestic presence of Mount Vesuvius. His artistic ability appealed to his clients and his paintings exhibited his meticulous attention to detail.
