Description
Dimensions: 49” H x 62” W x 2 ⅜” D
The large scale of this 19th-century French landscape painting allows viewers to feel as if they are stepping into the French countryside. The features of the landscape are painted loosely in soft focus, giving the impression of both an expansive space and a windswept plain. The sky takes up half the composition and is loaded with clouds, and one can imagine lying in the grass and picking out shapes from them as the wind blows. The scene is serene but not still. We can picture the clouds shifting shape by the minute, and the road outstretched ahead reminds us of forward progress and the passage of time. The effects of time can be seen in the holes and tears that punctuate the canvas and in the worn giltwood frame, where spots reveal the wood underneath. The canvas has become partly detached from the stretcher bar on the right side. These signs of wear almost feel fitting for such a rustic image. The signature of the artist, Georges Villain, can be seen in the bottom right corner. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering the age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Please view the detailed image gallery for the current condition or reach out with any questions. - More Information
