Untitled (Cosmos), Acrylic on Canvas by Margaret Milliken, c.1966 Large 84 x 54"

Description
Untitled (Cosmos), c.1966, is a large-scale acrylic on canvas by American painter Margaret Milliken (1913–1968), whose work embodies the vibrant spirit of the postwar Abstract Expressionist movement. Measuring 84 x 54 inches, the painting is a commanding floral abstraction, its dynamic brushwork and luminous palette transforming natural form into pure pictorial expression.
Milliken was born in Cres, off the Dalmatian Coast, and emigrated to Pennsylvania as a child. By the late 1950s, she had become an active participant in New York’s art community, studying with Hans Hofmann and exhibiting widely in the New York–Philadelphia corridor. Her works appeared in significant venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Provincetown Art Association, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the Silvermine Guild. She was also represented in the Columbia Art Museum Biennial (South Carolina) and held solo exhibitions at Long Island University and the Dubin Gallery in Philadelphia.
Her paintings were acquired by both private collectors and public institutions; notably, two monumental floral canvases flanked the entrance of the Huntington Hartford Museum in New York. Tragically, her career was cut short by her death from ovarian cancer in 1968 at the age of fifty-five.
This rare surviving canvas exemplifies Milliken’s artistic philosophy: “In the development of my work, I have been trying to transform the flowers into a flowering canvas: to turn naturalistic forms into pictorially expressive light.”
Untitled (Cosmos) is both a work of historical importance and a compelling acquisition for collectors of American postwar abstraction.
I have included two paintings by Maragaret Milliken that I have recently sold. -
