When fabled female illustrator Mary Blair was not creating fantasy images for Disney, she was doing freelance illustration work for commercial clients. We think that is one of those much rarer works. It depicts a highly stylized young woman with windswept hair riding side-saddle on an equally charming horse. The work is masterfully designed, with a few basic flat patterns and shapes. Blair's limited palette consists of alternating areas of red, green, and black shapes. The composition is punctuated by two thin, arched lines that may indicate motion or suggest that this is a rocking horse. Mystery is a good thing in art. Signed lower right, Mary Blair. Inscription on verso that may not be from the artist's hand, reads:" Sodl - H. Korton, 44. E. 50 st.
