Antique French Orientalist oil painting of a street scene by Berchère
French, 19th Century
Canvas: Height 47cm, width 38cm
Frame: Height 75cm, width 67cm, depth 10cm
This captivating oil painting on canvas is the work of Narcisse Berchère (1819–1891), a 19th-century French artist celebrated for his evocative Orientalist compositions. Berchère’s extensive journeys through the Middle East deeply influenced his art, which often reflects the vibrant architecture and daily life of the region.
In this particular scene, a majestic mosque dominates the composition, its brilliant white dome set in striking contrast against a vivid azure sky. The architecture, unmistakably Middle Eastern in style, features distinctive archways and corridor-like passages. Flourishing vegetation, including a tall palm tree, frames the setting, while to the left, a structure covered in dense greenery is rendered in shadow.
Energy and liveliness fill the foreground. At the canvas’s centre stands a watchful dog, attentively observing a nearby group of traders. These figures, dressed in traditional garb, are shown either in conversation or tending to their goods - an array of vividly rendered produce, including bright oranges and richly hued watermelons, which add an appealing splash of colour and life to the scene. Nearby, several men accompany donkeys, and in the background, additional figures are depicted making their way toward the mosque.
Scattered throughout the composition, both in the air and among the foliage, are small birds in black and white. Their delicate rendering brings a delightful and whimsical charm to the work - an element typical of Berchère’s detailed style.
The painting is presented in a highly decorative giltwood frame, finely carved with motifs of acanthus leaves and floral embellishments. The canvas bears the artist’s signature ‘Berchère’ in the lower right corner, and an old retailer’s label remains affixed to the reverse.
This exceptional piece, rich in atmosphere and detail, would make a valuable and distinguished addition to any collection of Orientalist or 19th century art.
