Painted by Nicolas Louis André Prevost (Swiss, 1817–1864), a 19th-century artist admired for his Orientalist and landscape compositions, this work depicts a tranquil riverside view dominated by a domed mosque and slender minarets beneath a luminous evening sky. Trained in Switzerland and active during the mid-century, Prevost was influenced by the poetic naturalism of the Swiss Romantic school. His paintings reveal a refined sense of atmosphere, light, and compositional balance, blending architectural clarity with delicate tonal harmony.
In this scene, a mosque and palm trees rise along the riverbank, their silhouettes reflected in the still surface of the Nile. Placed at the centre of the composition, a solitary figure pauses at the shore, while distant hills fade into a veil of cloud and mist. The warm light of sunset softens the scene, giving it radiance and allowing Prevost to capture the stillness of twilight through fine brushwork and colour.
Signed ‘Prevost’ lower right, the painting is and presented in a fine giltwood frame., the painting is preserved in fine condition.
Its lyrical handling of light and atmosphere, together with its serene subject and ability to induce a serene sense of contemplation, make it a great decorative piece and turn it into a fine addition to any collection.
