The main job of a cartoonist is to parody people. He exaggerates, caricatures, or creates satirical statements about someone’s traits or habits. In Richard Denison Taylor's work for Playboy, he specialized in what we could view today as objectifying women as sex objects for men's pleasure. That was essentially the point of Playboy, as with other mid-century men's magazines. It was a different world back then. To Taylor's credit, he can take a jab too. In "Walking the Plank," Taylor flips the script. Enraged female pirates, brandishing swords and a blunderbuss, force a bound male (Taylor) to face the choice between taking a jab and taking a plunge. Self-deprecating humor is on full display in this Richard Taylor "it's all just fun" cartoon, dated roughly between 1955 and 1965. Signed lower right and unframed. Publication undetermined
