Description
This signed and dated oil painting by Robert C. Black III (1938) presents a contemplative view of the Rocky Mountains, most plausibly situated within the Colorado Front Range or southern Rocky Mountain region. The composition is defined by a sequence of rounded, eroded mountain forms that unfold laterally across the picture plane, emphasizing geological continuity and atmospheric recession rather than a singular, iconic summit. Such landforms are consistent with the older, weathered ranges of central and southern Colorado and distinguish the scene from the sharper alpine profiles of the northern Rockies.
The painting is executed on Devoe Academy Board, a professional artist’s support manufactured by Devoe & Reynolds Co., Inc., one of the most prominent American suppliers of artists’ materials in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This support was widely used by academically trained painters and art students, and its presence here reinforces the work’s alignment with disciplined, studio-grounded practice rather than casual or amateur production.
Black employs confident palette-knife handling throughout, with structured impasto used to articulate terrain and snow-covered slopes. A restrained chromatic range of cool blues, muted grays, and warm off-white tones conveys winter light and wind-scoured surfaces, while sparse clusters of dark conifers anchor the foreground and situate the scene below true alpine timberline. The painting’s surface is tactile yet controlled, reflecting an observational approach grounded in direct study of the landscape.
Stylistically, the work aligns with American regional landscape painting of the interwar period, synthesizing Impressionist technique with realist structure. Its measured composition and emphasis on mass and form place it firmly within the tradition of academically trained American painters responding to the western landscape during the 1930s.
The painting measures 18 x 24 inches and is currently presented in a new, sympathetic frame. The original period frame is retained and included, allowing for historically accurate presentation if desired. -
