Janus, the ancient Roman god of beginnings and endings, transition, time and portals is depicted in this Neo-Expressionist painting from. Sax Berlin. The piece puts a 21st century interpretation on the two faced animistic god; the painting represents the middle ground between concrete and abstract dualities and is particularly relevant in these times of global uncertainty and flux. The Janus gates were closed in times of peace but thrown wide open in times of war, surely this interpretation from Berlin reflects the necessity of throwing the gates wide open and seeking peace.
